Elva Angell Fulton was born in Lakewood, NM but always said age is just a number and mine is unlisted, however I will tell you I was born on February 16th on her grandmother’s ranch. She was born to Whicher Doepp and Rachel Sarah (Adams) Angell. She was the firstborn child of cattle ranchers of Lakewood, NM and a child of the pioneer ranching families that settled in the Pecos Valley of New Mexico.
Elva was educated in Lakewood, Carlsbad and Artesia, New Mexico where she graduated (she rode the school bus for 48 miles a day) and then met and married William Lewis Fulton on December 21st, 1936 (one year after graduated from high school). She attended college for 1.5 years. They settled in Carlsbad, NM where Elva and Lewis opened their own business. They raised three children. They were married 58 years, when Lewis passed away.
Elva was a Campfire and Bluebird leader for many years. A member of Altrusa Clubs of America, a past mother advisor of Rainbow Love Assembly 42, a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Carlsbad Chapter, and a member of the Artesia Chapter and Grand Representative of various states at the time of her death. She was a member of the Victory Baptist Church. She traveled some, fished and hunted with her husband. Her hobbies were dancing, reading, playing bridge, card games, dominoes, scrabble and she loved crossword puzzles. She is survived by her children Donald Lewis Fulton & wife Donna of Fayetteville, AR, Barbara Ann William & husband Ron of Hobbs, NM, Cyndie Diane Cribbs & husband Rick of Lovington, NM, six grandchildren, Jonathan Fulton of Alaska, Shawn Fulton & wife Wendy of Tomball, TX, Randy Brewer of Hobbs, NM, Stephanie Sowers & husband Mike of Carlsbad, NM, Misty Wiggins & husband Shawn of Carlsbad, NM, Amy Webster of Lubbock, TX. Eleven great grandchildren Jake, Cale, Chelsea, Destiny, Tyler, Dillon, Brooke, Cydnie, Tristan, Parker and Logan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Lewis, and her sister Helen Neely Childress.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 10:00 AM at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel; burial will follow at the Carlsbad Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends December 30, 2009 from 4 to 6 PM at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel in Lovington, NM. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home of Lovington and Denton-Wood Funeral Home of Carlsbad.
Memorials may be made in her honor at Nor Lea Hospital Foundation, 1600 N. Main, Lovington, NM 88260, where she received loving and compassionate care.
Although she will be missed we all know she and daddy are dancing in heaven.
